Sam Bayard Collection
From the same part of central Pennsylvania as my father, Samuel Preston Bayard (1908 - 1997) made a lifetime career of ethnomusicology. Even as an adolescent he was interested in collecting the music of his region. His works are included in the Library of Congress. They're also published and available in annotated musical notation form in Dance to the Music, March to the Fife and Sarah Armstrong's Hill Country Tunes (free here), as well as on-line recordings. Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers, fiddle and banjo, and fiddlers Todd Clewell and Chris Dalnodar have made the music more assessible. My clawhammer arrangements here rely on the fiddled melody. Tabs are included on this site.
