We perhaps wouldn't know about this Kentucky fiddler from Todd County near Elkton if it wasn't for Bruce Greene, who sought and recorded old time fiddlers in the early 70's.  Then Jeff Titon published a book of Kentucky Old Time Fiddle Tunes and included some of Mr. Phelp's tunes.  We know he lived from 1885 - 1977, learned from local fiddlers, including Black fiddler Will Stegall (b. 1869), and played for dances.  Jake's tunes are delightfully crafted and uncommonly appealing, in the best sense of how we envision Appalachian music.
